Disaster Action  Teams are the first Red Cross responders on scene during a disaster. They most often respond to single family fires, responding an average of once every 72 hours. When responding to calls, Disaster Action Team members provide a variety of types of service including: disaster assessment, feeding, sheltering (often in the form of arranging lodging), casework, financial assistance, and bulk distribution.

Team members must respond to calls in a reliable and efficient manner and must be able to work in adverse conditions. To begin volunteering in DAT, please see the section entitled: Steps to Get on a DAT Team.

There are two types of on-call teams:

Night & Weekend Teams

• Are on-call one week at a time, once every 4 or 5 weeks
• Respond during the hours of 6pm-8am on weekdays, 24/7 weekends & holidays
• Divided into North SD County, South SD County  & Imperial Valley teams

Day DAT

• Are on-call day-by-day (someone calls you to sign-up for a particular day)
• Respond during the hours of 8am-6pm, weekdays (M-F)
• Divided into North SD County, South SD County & Imperial Valley teams

1) Complete a Background Check (for new volunteers, this is done after Red Cross Orientation)

5) At DAT Orientation, those interested are asked to submit a DAT Application. Once spots are available on a DAT team, new members are chosen from those who have completed the DAT Orientation and a DAT application.
