What books do I need for class?
For many of our classes, students are responsible for obtaining their own books for the class. Many of our books are available for free download or to purchase at an affordable price. To find out what books are required for your class, visit our website at http://www.redcross.org/takeaclass and click on your class to see a list of the class texts. Other material requirements may be listed in the course description for your class as you register in the American Red Cross Learning Center (https://classes.redcross.org/Saba/Web/Main).
How can I find out if there are pre-requisites for my class?
Prerequisites are listed in the class description when you register for the class. Prerequisites are firmly enforced. Students that do not meet the prerequisites as outlined will not be allowed to stay for the course. No refunds will be given if prerequisites are not met.
How long will my certification be valid?
Certification validity periods vary from course to course. All American Red Cross CPR and Standard First Aid certifications are valid for two years beginning in January 2011.
I have previously taken a CPR class. Is there a refresher course that I can take?
You may be eligible to take a review class. Review courses are shortened classes for students that have previously taken training. Students should have basic knowledge and skills. Students are eligible for review classes 12 months from the expiration of their American Red Cross or American Heart Association certification. Students must bring certification as proof of eligibility to class.
I heard that there is a new curriculum and new science in CPR. Do I need to retake the class?
No. The training that you received is still relevant and valid. Every five years, the American Red Cross undergoes a formal revision to its curriculum to examine the research-based science as well the effectiveness of the learning strategies. In 2011, many of our programs are being revised to include the latest in emergency care science and educational based research.
Can I take a class if I have a medical condition, mobility issues or a special educational need?
We will work with you to accommodate medical conditions or any disabilities as much as possible, although many classes do have specific certification requirements. For more information, please call 1 800 RED CROSS.
