The San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross ("ARC") offers its employees a safe and pleasant place to work, competitive salaries and a wide array of benefits. Eligibility varies with employee status and longevity. Most benefits are available to employees scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week. The following is an overview of our benefits package:
Medical Plans
As an American Red Cross employee, you work every day to keep our programs and services going. While helping to anticipate, avoid and alleviate suffering of families across the country, it's good to know that adequate insurance coverage will be available for you and your family whenever you need it. That's why the American Red Cross Health Benefits Program offers you the highest quality coverage at the most reasonable rates we can negotiate.
ARC offers all eligible employees a choice from two Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and one Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). All HMOs have low co-pays for office visits and prescriptions, and coverage for preventative care. ARC employees contribute their share of the premium cost through pre-tax deductions.
Dental Plans
Eligible employees may choose from a prepaid dental plan or an indemnity dental program on a voluntary basis. Premiums for dental coverage are paid by pre-tax deductions.
Vision Plan
ARC offers low-cost eye exams, frame allowances and lenses through a voluntary vision plan. Premiums for vision coverage are paid through pre-tax deferrals.
Time Off
ARC provides generous Paid Time Off (PTO) for sick and vacation or personal leave for all full-time, and many part-time, employees. PTO accruals increase with years of service, ultimately reaching 27-30 days per year. ARC provides ten (10) paid holidays per year. Bereavement Leave and Jury Duty are also available to employees.
Retirement Plans
Much of what we do at the American Red Cross deals with saving. Saving lives. Saving resources. ARC offers two ways for you to save for something equally important: your future.
- 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan
The ARC 401(k) Savings Plan allows eligible employees to defer 1% to 13% of their salary on a pre tax basis. ARC matches 50% of the first 4% of deferrals with company funds. Employees individually direct the investment of their salary deferral and the matching funds into up to eleven investment options. The ARC 401(k) Savings Plan offers immediate eligibility and immediate vesting of Company funds.
- Pension Plan
ARC's Retirement System benefits are provided at no cost to employees. ARC will credit an amount equal to 1% of each employee's eligible earnings to the plan. Employees can contribute to the plan as well, up to 10% of their annual salary. Interest is earned and credited annually. Benefits become fully vested after a period of five years.
Disability Insurance
ARC provides basic Long Term Disability (LTD) insurance at no cost to employees working 30 or more hours per week.
Life and AD&D Insurance
ARC offers eligible employees a basic level of paid life and AD&D insurance in the amount of one times their annual salary. Several options exist to allow employees to purchase additional life and/or AD&D insurance for themselves and eligible dependents at group rates. Several levels of coverage are available.
Tax Reduction Plans
- Flexible Spending Account
ARC offers eligible employees the option of a Dependent Care or Health Care Expenses Reimbursement Account. This account allows employees to set aside money before taxes to pay for dependent care or health care expenses for eligible dependents. Pre-Tax Payments Employees are able to pay their medical, dental and vision on a pre-tax basis.
- Pre-Tax Payments
Employees are able to pay their medical, dental, vision and life/AD&D insurance premiums on a pre-tax basis.
Additional Benefits
ARC offers a number of other benefits that help employees in a personal way.

Employee Assistance Program: Outside professional assistance available to employees and their family members when needed to resolve personal problems. This program is administered on a confidential basis by an independent firm, Integrated Insights, at no cost to employees.

CPR and First Aid Training: Our business is saving lives… and, as such, all employees are encouraged to become CPR and First Aid Certified. Additionally, employees have the opportunity to take any of the ARC community education courses at little or no cost at all!

Banking Services: ARC employees who have their paychecks automatically deposited enjoy free checking services at any Union Bank of California location. ARC employees are given the opportunity to join North Island Federal Credit Union as well.
